The National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia, has published, for the first time, the external statistics (balance of payments, international investment position and gross external debt and gross external claims) prepared in accordance with the new international standards, defined by the International Monetary Fund in the "Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual" (BPM6), and the "Guide on the External Debt Statistics" (2013).
The new BPM6 methodology of the IMF is a result of the need to adapt the external statistics to the changes in the international economic and financial environment in the past two decades and should provide greater international comparability of data, as well as consistency of various macroeconomic statistics at the national level. This primarily concerns the harmonization of BPM6 with the System of National Accounts (SNA 2008).
The balance of payments data for April 2014, the international investment position for the first quarter of 2014, and the gross external debt and gross external claims for the first quarter of 2014, have been published on new standard reports, in which certain categories are with altered content and structure. In order to ensure comparability of data, new time data series have been published, too.
The "Information on the changes in the balance of payments, international investment position and external debt arising from the application of the new international statistical standards", published on the website of the National Bank in early June 2014, provides more detailed information about the changes in the way of presentation, the methodological changes and the effects thereof.
By publishing the data in accordance with the new international methodological framework, the Republic of Macedonia joins the EU Member States that plan to introduce the new standards in 2014.
