Skopje, 29 March 2001
Press release of the NBRM
Regarding the unjustified speculations in certain media about possible devaluation of the exchange rate of the Denar against the Deutsche Mark, at times when the activities undertaken by the National bank of the Republic of Macedonia started to show positive results in stabilizing the exchange rate and its return to its previous level, the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia would like to inform the public that it will continue to implement measures which will enable stable exchange rate of the Denar against the Deutsche Mark.
At the same time, we would like to remind that the stability of the exchange rate of the Denar against the Deutsche Mark represents a nominal anchor of the monetary policy in sustaining the macroeconomic stability in the Republic of Macedonia, which was stipulated as an objective in the Decision on monetary and credit policy for 2001 and was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia.
In order to achieve this objective and sustain the stability of the exchange rate of the Denar against the Deutsche Mark, the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia, through the banking system, undertakes and will continue to undertake all necessary activities, actions and instruments available at its disposal.
Therefore, we would like to appeal to the mass media not to increase the public anxiety by publishing such unjustified speculations.
