Skopje, 22 October 1999
Press release of the NBRM
Regarding the statements given in the media yesterday, in order the public to be informed regularly and correctly, National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia releases following statements:
The contracts between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of China - Taiwan are not signed by the Governor Ljube Trpeski. Namely, the first contract in total amount of 12 million US dollars is signed by Mr. Aleksandar Dimitrov, Minister for Foreign Affairs and the second one, in total amount of 20 million US dollars is signed by Mr. Jordan Markovski, Deputy Minister of Finance.
The speculations that the denar will devalue are not correct. On the contrary, during the last months National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia was faced with higher supply of foreign exchange than demand and therefore intervened by buying the excess of foreign exchange, in order to stop the appreciation of domestic currency. In accordance with this, there are no macroeconomic preconditions for devaluation of the denar.
At the same time we would like to inform you that neither the Governor, nor the Deputy Governor has given the statements regarding the foreign exchange rate and its effects to the inflation and the balance of payments. In this regard, the statements that have currently been exploited are part taken out of the context of their statements given before a certain period of time.
