Press release of the NBRM
Today, the Governor of the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia (NBRM), Petar Goshev, had a meeting with Francesco Mazzaferro, Head of the EU Neighbouring Regions Division of the European Central Bank (ECB), to discuss the future cooperation between the two institutions. Mr Mazzaferro was accompanied by Ambassador Erwan Fouere, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission.
Mr. Mazzaferro and Ambassador Fouere spoke with Governor Goshev about the importance that the ECB attaches to technical cooperation with central banks in south-eastern Europe. Discussions focused on the participation of the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia in the crisis response package for candidate and potential candidate countries, which is currently being prepared by the European Commission. Part of the package is intended to provide assistance from the ECB and EU member states' central banks to strengthen capacities for financial supervision of central banks in these countries, and to reinforce cooperation in the context of addressing the global financial crisis.
Governor Goshev, Mr Mazzaferro and Ambassador Fouere also discussed a planned project involving the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia under the IPA 2009 programme. It is envisaged that the NBRM and the ECB will jointly implement with the involvement of several central banks of the European Union a project aimed at reviewing the legal, organisational and human resource aspects of the NBRM. The goal of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the central bank to further align it with the institutional and operational framework of the European System of Central Banks.
During the discussions, it was noted that the assistance to be funded by the European Commission and delivered by the European Central Bank is intended to maintain and strengthen the role of the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia as an independent institution, performing its functions in line with the best practices of central banking in the European Union. The NBRM is fully committed to cooperating with central banks across the region and highly values the role of the European Central Bank and the European System of Central Banks in fostering central bank cooperation, and promoting and leading technical assistance efforts in the region.
