Payment cards are used by their holders during payment for purchases of goods and services at the point of sale or online, and for withdrawing cash from an ATM.
The most commonly used credit cards are debit and credit cards:
-
Debit cards are linked to a bank account and allow the holder to withdraw cash from it through an ATM or to make payment of the purchased goods and services. As a result, each of the above mentioned activities results in debiting of the bank account that is linked to the debit card. The bank account can be debited without any delay or at determined time delay. Debit cards are the most widely used types of payment cards in the Republic of North Macedonia.
-
Credit cards provide the holder a credit line and the possibility of deferred payment. The size and duration of the credit line is subject to agreement between the owner of the credit card and the issuer of the credit card.
In the Republic of North Macedonia, the use of credit cards is relatively lower compared to the use of debit cards.
